Counterintuitive, right? Hey there! It’s Erin here, and today, over a cup of coffee, I want to share with you the most transformative piece of career advice I ever received. If you’ve ever caught yourself dreaming about the next big title on your business card, this one’s especially for you.
Back when I was a director, I was gifted a piece of advice that seemed quite simple at first but proved to be incredibly profound. It came at a time when I was trying to figure out how to grow, and felt like I was stuck. The advice was straightforward yet challenging: “Don’t worry about the title, go get the experience.”

This advice was a game changer. It shifted my focus from seeking titles to seeking experiences that truly mattered—those that would not only enhance my resume but also enrich my professional life deeply. It taught me that real growth and recognition are a byproduct of the value we create and the experiences we gather, not just the titles we chase. I had been doing this, but unconciously. Putting intentional focus behind it was momentus for me.
Why Experience Matters More Than Titles
In the world of business, titles are often seen as symbols of success. However, they can also be deceptive. Chasing after a title can lead you to overlook the broader scope of what you can contribute to your company and your own growth. Focusing solely on a title can limit your potential to engage in projects that foster genuine skill development and personal satisfaction.
Instead, when you concentrate on accumulating diverse experiences, you learn more, do more, and ultimately become more. You become a person who not only knows the ropes but also one who can lead others with confidence and credibility. This approach not only positions you as a key player within your current team but also as a respected leader in your industry.
The True Value of Adding Value
When you shift your mindset from title chasing to value creation, you begin to see your career as a journey of meaningful milestones, not just a series of job titles. This perspective helps you build a professional path where each step is an opportunity to learn something new, contribute to your team, and make a real difference.
This focus on adding value helps ward off impostor syndrome too—a common challenge among high-achievers. Knowing that you’ve earned your place through genuine contributions provides a solid foundation of self-assurance that no title alone can offer.
Your Career, Your Narrative
As you move forward in your career, think about the legacy you want to leave behind. What stories do you want to tell? What experiences will define your professional life? Remember, when you’re more focused on being a valuable team player than just a title holder, you’re likely to find greater satisfaction and success.
So, let’s put aside our title ambitions for a moment and focus on what truly enhances our careers: our experiences, our contributions, and our growth as leaders and innovators.
